Snowboarding is no longer an afterthought at most ski resorts, says three-time Olympian Kelly Clark. In fact, riders account for much of the recent growth in the winter sports industry. Still, some places try harder, offering large, carefully maintained terrain parks, pipes and powder runs. “It takes a lot of effort,” says Clark, who will compete at the Winter X Games next week in Aspen, Colo. She shares some favorite places to ride with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.

Snowboarders helicopter to a remote lodge and usually take a snowcat to reach untracked powder. (Chatter Creek leases more than 100 square miles of backcountry property.) At the end of a long day of riding, guests retreat to a private, isolated lodge. “There’s no nightlife, there’s no resort. It’s just you, your guide and some of your coolest friends.
